Hydrogen is widely used to ensure technological processes in various industries: oil and gas chemical (production of mineral fertilizers, polymers, and others), oil refining, food industry, iron&steel and power industry.
In Russia, steam reforming technologies/SMR (>99% of produced hydrogen) and water electrolysis (<1% of produced hydrogen) are employed on a commercial scale.
The primary criteria for selecting the best practicable technology are the availability and cost of resources (gas, water, electricity) and the required performance.
Per kilogram cost of hydrogen produced using the SMR method is roughly 4-6 times lower than that of hydrogen produced by electrolysis.
For up to 500-1000 m3/h capacities, the CAPEX related to steam reforming unit construction is essentially higher than those related to supply of electrolysis package plant. For 1000 m3/h and 500 m3/h capacity in some cases, it may be practicable to use the SMR technology. For a capacity over 2000 m3/h the use of SMR is most appropriate.
To make a precise evaluation, the calculation includes CAPEX for the plant construction on a project-specific basis, the consumed resources cost, the plant service charge, operator labor payment expenditures, and others.
R&P Co. Grasys offers solutions based on both technologies. Grasys is the only Russian licensor of the steam reforming technology. The company’s specialists are well experienced in designing and building industrial-scale plants at the Russian enterprises.
