Bashneft started a high-tech gas processing unit

5 June 2024

The gas processing plant will process 17.5 million m3/year of the permeate stream formed during purification of natural gas and associated petroleum gas (APG).

Bashneft (part of Rosneft) started a new high-tech unit for permeate (acid gas) processing at automated gas treatment complex located at the Metelinskoye field in Bashkortostan. The development of technological potential is one of the key strategic elements of Rosneft. The company places a priority to innovative activities and identifies technological leadership as a core driver of competitive strength in the oil market.

  • The new permeate purification package has become a substantial part of the automated gas treatment complex which construction resulted in several stages as part of the implementation of Bashneft’s large-scale gas program;
  • The start-up of the membrane gas separation modular container as part of the first stage of the complex at the Metelinskoye field enabled the gas mixture quality to meet the supply requirements to gas distribution pipelines;
  • During winter peaks supply volumes from this membrane unit exceed 40 thousand m3/day, thus fully meeting the gas demand of about 3 thousand households in the Duvan region of Bashkortostan.

The commissioning of the second stage of the complex enabled to double production of commercial gas through the APG involvement in the production, as well as the production of high-purity mixture of natural gas and APG. A part of the produced gas is sent to consumers while the other serves as fuel to generate its own electricity at the Metel gas piston power plant (GPPP) that generates electricity of over 75 million kWh/year. This ensures the equipment operation at the company’s Arlanskoye and Naratovskoye fields in the Krasnokamsk region of the republic.

Through the start of the final stage of the gas treatment complex the environment footprint will be reduced whereas industrial and household consumers will be provided with more eco-friendly fuel. Furthermore, introduction of the improved process cycle will ensure the level of APG beneficial use at the Metelinskoye field of over 96%.

The membrane gas treatment unit at the Metelinskoye field has been developed and manufactured by R&P Co. Grasys.

The supplied equipment includes:

  • Membrane gas separation modular container with a preliminary gas filtration treatment skid, membrane gas separation package, necessary instrumentation, shut-off and control valves, support systems;
  • Non-process heat exchange equipment for heating raw natural gas and intermediate streams;
  • Distribution board (DB) of the power supply system (including automatic circuit breaker) of general industrial design for open-area placement outside hazardous areas;
  • Cabinet of an automated monitoring and industrial process control system for installation in explosion-proof room;
  • Primary fire-fighting equipment in a membrane modular container;
  • Spare parts, tool and accessories for 2 operation years.

Grasys membrane hydrocarbon units enable to significantly adjust the associated petroleum gas properties by removing a substantial portion of heavy hydrocarbons (C4+). In doing so, methane is concentrated with minimal pressure loss in the target stream, which is of particular importance when treating APG to meet the gas transmission network requirements and fuel gas requirements for gas turbine power plants. In addition, just as importantly, membrane units are instrumental in reducing sulfur-bearing impurities in fuel gas, and complete excluding aerosols, droplets of moisture and solid particles available therein.

The fuel gas treatment degree can vary substantially depending on the feed gas composition and treated gas requirements. The R&P Co. Grasys integrated solution ensures associated petroleum gas treatment to meet fuel gas requirements as to hydrogen sulfide.
